Honoring Bravery: The Remarkable Story of Late Captain Anshuman Singh Kirti Chakra Awardee

Captain Anshuman Singh was posted at Siachen Glacier under the Operation Meghdoot as a health professional. He was awarded the second highest Gallantry award, the Kirti Chakra in Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on July 05, 2024 by President Smt Droupadi Murmu.

Captain Anshuman Singh belonged to the Army Medical Corps, 26TH Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. The Award was received by his widow Smriti Singh and his mother Smt Manju Singh. Smriti in a interview, described how they fell in love at first sight in college. The couple was in a long distance relationship for 8 years before they married. Just within 2 months of their marriage, Anshuman Singh got posted at Siachen Glacier under Operation Meghdoot.

On July 19, 2024, around 3 am, a short circuit sparked a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump. Captain Singh took prompt action to rescue those trapped inside. He saved four to five people before the fire spread to a nearby medical investigation room. He was severely burned in the process and succumbed to his injuries.

According to recent Estimates, Operation Meghdoot costs around Rs 6 crore daily accounting for around Rs 22,000 crore annually. Brave soldiers posted at such extreme conditions fight to defend our country every single day. Let us all pay our tribute to their bravery.
