When is Summer Solstice 2024?

June 21 is significant as the summer solstice, longest day and the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. According to NASA, this year, the summer solstice globally will appear on June 20 at 4:50 p.m. EDT. However, in India, it will occur on June 21 at 8:09 p.m. IST.

Why is Summer Solstice 2024 unique?

 The Summer solstice usually occurs between June 20 and June 22. But this year is unique as it has occurred the earliest in 228 years since June 20, 1796.

The Sun reaches its highest point in the sky from the perspective of the North Pole. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary Solstice gets its origin from sol, the Latin word for “sun.” This added sol to -stit- (a participial stem of sistere, which means “to stand still”) .

 

What is the significance of Summer Solstice?

It often signals the start of summer, influencing agricultural and weather patterns. But it may not be the hottest day of the year.  As India is currently crippled with heat, it might come as a respite as the days following the Summer solstice continue to shorten while the nights get longer. Since it is the shortest night of the year, you should plan the day well and go to sleep early.
